March 7th 2008 - Gender affairs and women's issues took center stage on this show. Mr Ken Hodge who has the portfolio of gender affairs and Dr Lana Hoyoung of The National Council of Women set the pace for the Celebration of International Women's Day on Anguilla.
Many points were discussed by the guests on this show. Mr Hodge had much to say in terms of the empowerment of girls, and the acceptance of women in the decision making process.
Dr Hoyoung mentioned her dream of seeing more women in leadership positions particularly in the political arena.
The plight of women on Anguilla were also brought to the forefront as the subject turned to the working poor and incentives for women to better care for their families.
Women should be aware of the important part they play in forming communities and women should also be aware of the very important role they fulfill in ensuring a viable future for their children.
Mr Hodge mentioned that he would like more women's group representatives to come forward to present their plans to his office. The office is there to help women, and the Government of Anguilla is aware of the important role women play in Nation building.
In relation to the topic of the gang culture on Anguilla, Mr Hodge made an important point when he stated that more families needed to start being familiees again. By spending more quality time together playing games, or just sitting and talking and getting to know each other; as was the case after the passing of a storm when all Televisions and other electronic entertainment were down.
Indeed a point well taken by all listeners. Children need love, care and acceptance. Let's all begin paying more attention to the needs of our children and probably the gang culture will be eradicated on our lovely Island.
