February 11th 2008 - Agriculture...Is the science becoming obsolete - Director of Agriculture on Anguilla Mr William Vanterpool was in high spirits as we explored the significance of the science of Agriculture.
He stressed the need for modernization, and the importance of saving land for agricultural purposes. Mr Vanterpool had strong words for authority figures to start recognizing that although the island is quickly moving to a developed status the role of agriculture should never be overlooked.
Young people were strongly encouraged to take up Agriculture and apply for government scholarships which are available to them.
A follow up show will be done on this topic since there is so much more to explore.
Listeners were strongly urged to refrain from smuggling plants and animals into the island since this practice is extremely dangerous and can be detrimental to our way of life.
Historically, agriculture has played a dominant role in the economies of the member states of the Caribbean, and particularly in the Eastern Caribbean However, Caribbean agriculture faces a number of challenges. Foremost among these is globalization, which has resulted in declining fortunes for the banana and sugar industries of most countries.
The role that agriculture will be required to play in the future economic development in the Caribbean is now more critical than ever.
Please contact Mr William Vanterpool for more information. We are positive that he will be happy to assist in anyway possible. He is that passionate about his work. Well done Mr vanterpool.
