February 19th 2008 - Let's Talk about Fibroids - A Visit with the Gynecologist - Dr Richard Etkin OB / GYN was the Let's Talk guest for this show.
Dr Etkin is an Ostetrician / Gynecologist with over 30 yrs of practice and he is an expert in the management of fibroids.
Although the exact cause of fibroids are unknown they seem to be influenced by estrogen.
So much information was learnt from the Doctor on this show. We learnt that the contraceptive pill may increase the risk of fibroids, that heavier women are more at risk, and that after menopause, fibroids begin to shrink. (finally something good about menopause)
Different tyoes of fibroids were also explained by the Doctor who asked women listeners to be aware of their bodies and symptoms, and to always get annual exams.
Because there are often no symptoms, you may only find out you have fibroids when you go for an internal examination. If you have symptoms and think you might have fibroids, see your doctor. You may be referred to a gynecologist (Dr Etkin is a gynecologist) a gynecologist will be able to diagnose whether you have fibroids or another condition. The doctor will give you an examination to feel your uterus for lumps or bulges.
It is estimated that 75% of women with fibroids do not have symptoms, therefore many women don't know they have fibroids. Hence the need to see your doctor...Visit your gynecologist...ask questions...and be aware of what’s happening with your body.
