March 17th 2008 - The Country Poverty Assessment (CPA) with emphasis on The Participatory Poverty Assessment (PPA) were the focus on this Let's Talk Conversation.
Ms Kiesha Gumbs, Mrs Lorrie-Rae Alleyne Franklin, Mrs Lana Hoyoung, and Ms Emma Ferguson were the Guests for this show and brought forward some valuable points on The role of The CPA and also The very important role of The PPA in the ongoing survey of living conditions on Anguilla.
In 2002, Anguilla conducted its very first poverty assessment and the result showed that 20% of the 3,730 households in Anguilla were living in poverty and that 2% of the population were living in severe poverty.
Mrs Hoyoung gave information on the background of the CPA, Mrs Alleyne - Franklin gave a general view as to what the survey was all about, Ms Ferguson explained her role as facilitator and Ms Kiesha Gumbs explained the role of the Participatory Poverty Assessment.
The ladies reminded the listeners to be aware of the truthfulness of their answers to the survey, and their attitudes towards the interviewers since government relied on the final reports of this survey to implement certain actions.
The community was again reminded to treat the interviewers well, to be forthcoming with their answers and to participate fully. If you're still wondering about the importance of the PPA please pay attention to the following:
The PPA seeks to identify:
· The types and levels of poverty
· The most vulnerable groups in society
· Factors contributing to poverty and deprivation
· Perception and experience of individuals, households and groups
· Effect/impact of existing poverty reduction initiatives
It is the voice of the people; they will have the opportunity to provide information about their reality. In this way we can deepen our understanding of deprivation and increase our awareness of the concerns, needs and priorities that exists in communities.
The data generated are therefore critical in determining the type of policies, interventions, and programes that must be implemented.
