January 11th 2008 - The DARE Initiative
Children all over the world are benifiting from a Program called Dare and we on Anguilla are no different.
Two friendly, well informed and community minded police officers Joined the conversation on Let's Talk to explain the Dare program as well as to inform listeners about drug awareness and prevention, and the DARE initiative.
Police officer Joyce and Police officer Lake explained the Dare program and created a lively conversation which listeners throughly enjoyed. They explained the program as follows:
· D.A.R.E. "humanizes" the police: that is, young people can begin to relate to officers as people.
· D.A.R.E. permits students to see officers in a helping role, not just an enforcement role
· D.A.R.E. opens lines of communication between law enforcement and youth
· D.A.R.E. Officers can serve as conduits to provide information beyond drug-related topics
· D.A.R.E. opens dialogue between the school, police, and parents to deal with other issues.
The officers explained that because of the DARE program it is now much easier for young people to approach the police to talk about situations which they may be going through.
A reality every parent must face is that there are drugs in our society and it’s not just there; but it’s easy to get it. We cannot deny it, we cannot ignore it.and parents are concerned. Illicit drug use among young people is a serious concern of parents, schools, communities, and governments in the Caribbean and in Anguilla.
Let's Talk congratulates Police Officer Joyce And Police Officer Lake on their brave and refreshing initiative of reaching out to youngsters on Anguilla and teaching them about the dangers of drugs.
