Inheritance law 1 - Making a will

Mr Alex RichardsonMarch 6th 2008 - Inheritance Law 1 - Making a Will - Legal Expert Alex Richardson was the Let's Talk guest for this show, and shared much valuable information with listeners.

Mr. Richardson mentioned that in his opinion the making of a will is of extreme importance and he gave it priority as the one of the most important documents one would ever sign in their lifetime.

Among points discussed on this show were wills in general, making a valid will and revoking a will. Several scenarios were also explored such as  someone dying and leaving no will  (Intestate) as well as the guidelines when there is indeed a valid will.

Wills are the most common way for people to state their preferences about how their estates should be handled after their deaths. Many people use their wills to express their deepest sentiments toward their loved ones. A well-written will eases the transition for survivors by transferring property quickly and avoiding many burdens.

Despite these advantages, many estimates figure that the majority of people do not have valid wills. While it is difficult to contemplate mortality, many people find that great peace of mind results from putting their affairs in order.

Lawyer Richardson also explained the steps and guidelines for making a valid will according to the local laws. He stressed that it was important that one must be over the age of 18 and of sound mind, that the will must be dated, and that it must be signed by two witnessess who must both be present at the same time.

He had strong words for Executors of estates who he felt sometimes believe that they own the estate. This practice in his view was cause for undue hardships for other beneficiaries of an estate.
