March 18th 2008 - Anguilla's Traffic Situation took center stage in the form of an Open Forum on this show.
Listeners were given the opportunity to call in and voice their opinions on the present traffic situation as well as other safety issues.
Anguilla is a small but rapidly developing island and Road traffic injuries constitutes a major public health problem that continues to claim lives, leave families and friends in sorrow and can also cause our fellow residents to become disabled.
The tremendous burden of death and disability resulting from road traffic crashes, oftentimes means the loss of the family breadwinner through death or disability and often forces the families of these victims into poverty.
Host Bree, gave some pretty alarming statistics on vehicular accidents from January 1st up to March 12th. The figures are mind boggling and made listeners take note of the seriousness of the situation.
For the month of January there were 34 road accidents in Anguilla.
For the month of February there were 42 road accidents in Anguilla with one fatality.
For the month of March (up to the 12th of March) there were already 15 road accidents.
Among other points mentioned were the use of seat belts and car safety seats for children, and cell phone use while behind the wheel.
Mention was also made of the incidence of drunk and drugged driving, as well as speeding, and underage drinking.
This show generated much interest and showed the need for more shows of this nature. Let's talk will most definitely do follow up shows on this subject.
A special thank you to all the listeners who called in and made some rather interesting points. Please know that we value your opinion and we'll keep listening and bringing into focus the issues that matter most to you.
