January 16th 2008 - The topic was Prostate Cancer - signs and symptoms, getting tested, and ways to prevent this disease.
Dr. Bryan, one of Anguilla's brilliant young Doctors was the guest and shared his knowledge on this disease. Prostate cancer is quite rampant among black men in particular, and the good Doctor had great advice for listeners.
Prostate cancer is a significant health problem for middle-aged and elderly men. In fact; it is the most frequently diagnosed cancer and one of the leading causes of cancer death among men.
While men of all racial and ethnic backgrounds are at risk, black men of African descent are at especially high risk and African-Caribbean men.
The prostate is about the size of a walnut. It lies just below the urinary bladder and surrounds the upper part of the urethra. The urethra is the tube that carries urine from the bladder and semen from the sex glands out through the penis.
The prostate is part of a man’s sex glands and so it is also affected by male sex hormones.
Prostate cancer is a malignant tumor, which arises within the prostate gland. Compared with other types of cancer, Prostate cancer is relatively slow growing, However if left untreated, the cancer may grow outwards and spread to organs and tissue close to the prostate.
As always this show was informative and educational and we encourage all men to please see your Doctor if you have questions.
